Discover Saint Barthélemy – n°23

Lost in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, this 9.7 square mile rock has this inexplicable charm about it. This enchanting island with gorgeous views, is famous across the world for its white sand beaches, it’s French “way of life” and unforgettable parties. Saint Barth’s charm hasn’t changed these last couple years, despite everything it’s been through. With lush vegetations and green mountain tops, it’s clear to see that the island has gotten it’s second wind after the devastating destruction it faced from Hurricane Irma. Difficult not to talk about it as it is now part of the history of the island, perched on our lips and engraved in the memories of all Saint Barth.

Orson Welles once said, “we’re born alone, we die alone,” but St. Barth is one of those precious places where the community takes precedence over the individual. In the wake of the hurricane, Irma has instilled in each of us invaluable values: humility in the face of nature and the power of the sum of individual strengths. Now two years later, the 2020 season promises to be under the best auspices: the hotels are reopening at record speed, the restaurants are setting the scene, and everyone is impatiently waiting for the famous Bucket Regatta. As has been the custom every year since 1995, the most spectacular yachts in the world, veritable floating palaces, will meet for four days in the port of Gustavia. The St. Barth Commuter, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, will continue to amaze its passengers by flying them to and from the famous Saint Jean Airport.

But the magic of Saint Barth is above all else, this hold it has on you. This physical attraction that binds you forever to this unique island. Living “on Saint Barth” is above all enjoying all these simple little moments that make our lives invaluable: watching a sunset at Gustavia’s lighthouse, exchanging a few smiles with the locals at La Pointe or listening to the sound of waves crashing on the pebbles of Grand Fond beach. Here, our connection with the elements of nature allow us to enjoy the present moment. Isn’t that what the epitome of happiness is? In Saint Barth, the greatest wealth is above all that of the heart. Welcome to Saint Barthélemy and welcome to Amour à Gustavia, your 23rd issue of Discover Magazine.
